Default denial?

I know I am an alcoholic, have been sober almost eight years. I attend meetings, have a sponsor, etc but it has dawned on me that many of the recollections common to most people have in the rooms I cannot pinpoint in my own life prior to recovery. Almost as though I can't relate. Very strange but am I denying my own alcoholism in a way? Would really love your thoughts on this.

In early recovery, I liked the idea that you should focus on similarities to what you hear in meetings.

Common recollections you can pinpoint or not - what is going to keep you sober?

Default Re: denial?

Hi riptide53,

I would suggest going to meetings you haven't been to before. Even meetings in another city or online. At some point you will surely find someone you can relate to. Just because you can't relate to someone else's story doesn't mean you are denying your own alcoholism. Clearly you aren't in denial because of all the work you are doing. Are you being too hard on yourself? Maybe it means you need to give your story away more so that others will here a "different" story. Service helps. Take it easy........and have a wonderful abstinent day.
