Hello!

There are options here on the site that can enhance your post. You can find these options above the text window.

  2. you can change your color of font
  3. you can change the size of font
  4. you can use
    • bullets
to offset your paragraphs or points
  5. you can determine where in the window the text will show up
  6. you can bold, italicize or underline your text
  7. you can insert links, photos, smileys
    1. you can add attachments
      1. you can make special emphases for a

        quote

Here's how!
See all those thingeys at the top of the chat text window (when making a new post)??? Using them will allow you to personalize your own post.

There are some that allow you to do some things more quickly than actually typing out the code/command..

.such as quoting something.
You can surround any text with [ quote] insert text here [ /quote ] and make it show into a quote box, offset from the other text. (Don't include the spacing inside the brackets [ ]... I had to here or it would show as a quote rather than the mechanics of the quote.)

The little caption icon (like what you find in cartoon pages for when a character speaks) is the one to use here. First, highlight the text you want in "quotes" and then click on the little white caption icon. Voila!

But I'm ahead of myself here...

Let's go through them in order of how they show above, okay?

1) The first is the strike out A. This is to remove ALL extra emphasis formatting you've added to a post. Instead of having to go through your post word/line by line, you can click that, it removes all the extras and you can just begin all over.

2) Next is the Fonts option. Click on the down arrow and choose which type of font style you want to use. This one is comic sans MS for example. Make sure members can actually read it though, some seem to be fun but are impossible to read.

3) Next is Sizes of the font. This is size 1. This is size 2 This is size 3. This is size 4. (My favorite.) This is size 5 (good for special, short lines) This is size 6. This is size 7. Obviously the larger the font, the more emphasis, but also the idea that you're shouting.

4) Next is color. See the "A" with a bold color line underneath? The bold line shows you what color you are currently using in your font. You can change your font just for fun. Or change it for special emphasis within a long post. Be sure to check the font color, that you can actually read it easily. Some are not pleasing to the eye especially for long sentences. Be careful when using REDS or oranges as they can trigger migraines or even seizures in some people. Those members with severe issues can adjust their viewing options in their profile page, but some of us may be triggered if it's in excess. Besides, reds and oranges again might make someone think you are angry.

5) The smiley face gives you options of inserting an icon or emoticon. You can use that option on top (and click on show all smileys) or on the right of the text box (and click on [More]) for a bigger selection. There is a limit of 12 in any one post.

6) Next is the paperclip icon which gives you the window for attaching an item to your post. You can upload from your computer, or from an URL.

7) & 8) are undo and redo (just like in your browser, for those "oops")

The second line of options:

1) B is for bolding any text. You can type this coding into your text if you wish using brackets and the b such as (and leave out the spaces) [ b ] text here [ /b ] Or click on the "B" up there and it will do it for you.

2) I is for italicizing your font. Just like the bolding, but use "i" instead of "b".

3) U is for underlining. Ditto with "u".

4) makes your text hug the left side of the window
5)makes your text print center of window
6) makes your text hug the right side of the window

7) & 8) are the bulleting for list making. These bring up a smaller window that you type in each item, hit enter and then type the next item. You can also use this for any
  1. one
item, just by highlighting it and clicking on the type of bulleting you want (ordered, unordered.) The first (7) should give # numbering, the second (8) should just give bold dots. if it's working correctly right now. You can also type these codes into any text you wish to bullet. Making a list can begin with [ LIST ] (again, no spaces) and then each list item begin with [ * ] Be sure to end with [ /LIST ].
9) & 10) are indentation elements. This one is the second (10) showing an increase in indentation.
11) Is the "link" insert option. (The blue globe and chain link.) Any time you have an URL that you want others to be able to click upon and go to, use this. A little window comes up, paste or type in the url and OK, and it will make that URL "clickable" in your post. Like this: http://forums.psychcentral.com/showt...66#post1773166

12) Is simply a quick way to remove links within a post.

13) The envelope, stationery icons are for inserting email links into a post. Such as this one for suggestions here at Psych Central: talkback @ psychcentral.com

14) This is a picture (in yellow) that allows for insertion of emoticons/icons/pictures from other sites, or from elsewhere on this site. Again, a little window comes up, type or paste in the URL and OK.

15) This is the little caption/speech icon I talked about above.

It puts things into quotes.
These last 3 are for using with other coding for texts. I've yet to use or need it.

The wrap attribute refers to how the text reacts when it reaches the end of each row in the text field. Wrapping can be one of three settings:

soft
hard
off

Soft forces the words to wrap once inside the text area but when the form is submitted, the words will no longer appear as such (Line breaks will not be added).

Hard wraps the words inside the text box and places line breaks at the end of each line so that when the form is submitted it appears exactly as it does in the text box.

Off sets a textarea to ignore all wrapping and places the text into one ongoing line.
16)
Code:
Wraps text
17)
HTML Code:
This wraps text into HTML coding.
18)
PHP Code:
This wraps php coding around text

There are smaller options up in the right hand corner. Up and down arrows, and small A and larger A. The arrows increase or decrease the size of the text window. The letters will change the text to posted view or back to formatting view.

PLEASE remember to "Preview Post" before submitting, to make sure it's just the way you want it, and legible!

Surely something here will help you customize your own posts! Good wishes!.

If the formatting controls that you see look like this...

Enhancing Posts

...you'll able to do some, but not all, of what (JD) describes above. After you click on the "Go Advanced" button, though...

Enhancing Posts

...you'll see the full set of controls, like this:

Enhancing Posts

If you hover your mouse pointer over a control it'll tell you (briefly) what it's for. What most of those controls actually do is insert BB code tags. You can read about BB code tags in more detail here. Most of them are available either through the formatting controls or by typing the brackets and text yourself.
