All day today I've been remembering nasty words said by abusers and remembering online stalker ex boyfriend and the nasty words he's said as well, how do I get my brain to stop playing back the nasty words that have been said to me over the years?
I'm deliberately putting this in women section for a reason, I hope it's allowed to stay here |

Ugh. I understand; I hate when I get stuck on such thoughts. Sometimes it happens after I have a dream about someone who was abusive.
The only thing I can think of to stop the "playback" is to be engaged with some activity that distracts your mind. Sometimes even going to the grocery store can help divert my attention from unpleasant thoughts. |

Do you think it might to make a list of positive names to start playing in your head? Like Awesome. Goddess. Incredible. Xena warrior princess. Gorgeous. Superwoman. You may have a few that you can think of.

Very sorry to hear it. I have the same problem. It isn't easy, for sure. I suppose we can only try to reduce the occurrence of these words. If we can reduce them by even one a day, that will be great.

What about arguing with the thoughts? For example, say you start playing "you're ugly" in your head. Snap back at it with a "no, I'm not" or something more specific even like "no, I've got a pretty face".
Typically whenever I get a compliment I either say or think to myself that the compliment is wrong... Very twisted, I gotta stop that. If I can do that for compliments, perhaps I can retrain my brain to do that for insults too. Might work for you? __________________ |

I always put the words into someone else's voice. (Someone that I particularly despise/loathe.) Then it is easier to tell them how I feel about their opinion of me... XD Might be silly, but it works sometimes.
