This is an expression that is common where I live. My husband brought it up in relation to my work situation. Basically it means that the truth will eventually be exposed. And yesterday it was.

I do research/editorial work for a website and we have monthly minimums as far as updating existing write-ups and producing new write-ups. We are given lists of projects we are supposed to prioritize, with some leeway to update other things if there is recent news, for example.

Some people have taken this leeway way too far. They found ways to sort of game the system and do easy updates while avoiding the priority stuff, which typically requires more work, to boost their statistics. These people receive compliments and last month got a bonus for having better production stats.

I and the others that actually work the way we are supposed to, tend to have lower production, because we take on the harder work. I have spoken to one co-worker about this. She is equally annoyed, but our boss is unapproachable, so we weren’t sure how to bring it up with, her, especially since it would be seen as criticizing her favorites.

Yesterday we had a team meeting. Our boss’s boss is a data analysis type and had been looking at website traffic. He concluded that a lot of those easy updates weren’t of interest to clients/generating traffic. So, new parameters were introduced that refocus our work on the real priorities. Those people are not going to be able to manipulate the system anymore!

Of course, I and the others who do real work could not be happier. I don’t think it will negatively affect my numbers, since I bwill be able to work the same way I also do. Some of the other people, well, they were extremely mad, saying that the changes were unfair and they won’t be able to meet the monthly minimums under the new system. I walked out of the meeting with a huge smile on my face!

Well we got the stats for January, the first full month since the changes. December doesn't really count due to holidays and lots of people taking time off.

I was second in the department of 10. 55 updates and 20 new, which, using the ratio of one new project equals 1.6 updates (to be able to compare between everyone) puts me second with the equivalent of 87 updates. My co-worker who had also been pressured by my boss about production in the past did the best with 95.

The people who used to manipulate the system were all lower! The woman that is in my sector who I find so annoying was on the low side, especially as far as new projects. Only 3?!? Others have been fired for things like that.

Omg! I know how long this has been bothering you and how unfair it's been! I'm so glad that you are finally getting some "justice" even if its just everyone having to follow the rules. The higher ups wise up sooner or later.

I had similar justice recently.

Glad karma kicked in for you.

I was second in the department again. 19 new/48 updates. Just a tad bit below the goal, but we were on reduced hours for summer and it was a short month. The only person above me was the guy that has the sector where he can use the same information to crank out a lot of updates at once, and what I do can't compete with that.

A few people had vacation, but I still was above 4 people that didn't take vacation and that have been with the company at least 8 months, so they should be completely up to speed. Again, the two other women in my department barely did any new projects - 2 and 7. I did 19. I don't get it?!?

I think your manager and the head honcho are going to see the truth of things very soon, if they aren't realizing it already...

Ugh, no. Back to being annoyed about this again.

The list of projects to be updated is published as a google doc every month. You put your name by the ones you are going to work on. I went to look for some more projects to work on the other day and I realized that one of the two other catty “mean girls” that cover my sector had grabbed nearly everything for herself. And, considering we’re halfway through the month, a lot were already sent for editing. Like, it would be nearly impossible for someone to work that quickly unless they got extremely lucky.

Out of curiosity, I took a look at a group of those projects, because it just seemed fishy to me. Not the nicest thing, but with all the toxicity and threats around production issues, I feel like I have to be informed and watch my back. Of a sampling of six I looked at, she had used the boilerplate language we use, when you make the requisite attempts to get information and can’t, in five of the cases. Five of six is really high. I maybe have to use that once or twice an entire month. Looking at the sources, they were pretty lame. One phone call, no one answered, a few e-mails. You can be sure if I had done that, the editor would have rejected it and told me I needed to make more of an effort, but clearly some people are allowed to get away with crap others aren’t.

Honestly, I am wondering if she even made the few lame attempts she said she did. With the group of co-workers I have, anything is possible. What she does not know is that this guy that used to work here before she arrived did the same thing and was eventually found out. Her little scam is not new.

I guess the other possibility is that she really sucks at what she does - an investigator that can’t find information! In that case, she’s clearly in the wrong line of work.

She is still doing it. I think she specifically chooses projects from Brazil because she doesn't speak Portuguese so it makes it easier to lie and say no one understands her when when she calls. But you are supposed to call; it's part of the damn job. If she can't make herself understood, she needs to leave those to me, since I actually speak Portuguese. My husband says it's very typically Chilean to look for ways to work the system with minimal effort.

I am worried because we are still using this content entry system that is a piece of garbage. so my production has been low. The thing is that the work I have done is very good. I have been able to get a lot of people to respond to me and give me useful information and have updated things that no one had been able to update with real information for a while. Clearly that's much more useful than "we couldn't find information". If she's doing minimal work and only cutting and pasting the boilerplate language, she isn't affected as much by the problems in the system as when I have to enter various types of new information, of course. I don't want to be taken to task over my lower production than hers this month, but I am nervous that might happen.

Sadly, our boss does not seem to give a crap about actually work quality. And I can't really bring up that I was looking at my co-worker's projects, even though to me it's a matter of watching my back.

Some interesting points here:

Is Your Workplace Encouraging Employees To Cheat?

The researchers, who also included Maureen L. Ambrose and Robert Folger from the University of Central Florida and Noel F. Palmer from the University of Nebraska–Kearney, found that cheating behavior was more likely to happen in organizations where employees were pressured to perform at a high level, especially when there were punishments for not achieving those levels. Lack of supervisor and other support also contributed to cheating environments.

“The risk factor and the threat is really the explanation for why cheating occurred. It’s that the employees feel the need to protect themselves,” Mitchell says. “What Mike and I found in the study with our coauthors is that self-protection comes out through the motion and through a specific, cognitive mental focus, and it has these basic goggles on or blinders on toward themselves. They get very self-interested and they get angry. Those two things, essentially, explain why they end up cheating.”

Explicitly stating the organization’s expectations with regard to ethical behavior is a critical step. Many organizations don’t overtly state such parameters, which may leave employees feeling like it’s okay to cheat as long as the end result was met, Baer says.

Fostering an environment where employees can safely express their concerns about work demands without fear of retribution allows them to signal when expectations may be beyond their ability to achieve without cheating.

And yes, she is STILL doing it. I am sick of it!
