I started a new job at a pizza place and I already want to run screaming. My boss is downright abusive, crossing lines. She was mocking my hearing impairment, threatening to fire me on my first day learning how to top pizzas and accusing me of doing nothing, getting angry when I was asking questions to make sure I was doing things correctly when it was all new to me and gossiping about me to other employees while I was there, like I wasn't as if I were completely deaf. I told her about my high frequency hearing loss during the INTERVIEW before she hired me and she denied ever having that conversation. I tried to use my own earbuds for the video training and she gave me a hard time over that, claiming the computer wouldn't work with mine and she was going to try and make me use her crusty, earwax caked ones. She barks and snaps at me when I've done nothing wrong and I'm trying my best, giving me death glares and being a bully in front of everyone else. I left the room and I heard her laughing and mocking me in an animated voice, "I don't know how to do it!" which I never said, but apparently being trained is too much to ask. I can't be expected to know where everything is when I've never been in the store before, like I'm psychic. Totally unreasonable.
Yesterday I had an IBS flare up and was miserable, almost lost control of my body at work and I would have if she hadn't sent me home two hours early. This is literally making me sick and not worth it, and my dad knows I can find something better (I'm still looking and applying at places, calling back, etc.) and wants me to quit but my mom refuses to let me. |

I am very sorry to hear that. She's truly abusive and being a bully.
Is it any way for you to report that to higher management or authorities? I agree with your Dad. You should quit ASAP. It's not worth it. Have you looked for a new job yet? |

Mocking your hearing impairment may be cause for a lawsuit. It is illegal to harass or demean someone because of an impairment. Threaten a lawsuit the next time she crosses the line. Go above her to her supervisor or to HR with a list of all that she's done. That is all entirely unacceptable.

I've looked for several new jobs and applied everywhere in desperation. No one's calling me back even though I've called to follow up with my applications.

Maybe while you are looking, you can put your foot down to this most abhorrent treatment of you, go above her and complain. (((((hugs)))))) There is no reason why this behavior should continue, and I would let it be known.

is this your first job?
is it a chain pizza place or a private owned one? i ask about the chain place because you could complain to the home office but in the long run that would make your life even worse.. she did offer you ear buds even if they were nasty...so she was in compliance. if this is your first job, well then i hate to say it but i would try to tough it out...work is work. some bosses are jerks. some work places are not fun. and since you have called around and no one is hiring, you have a choice work or be unemployed. if it is a chain place there might be an issue with you having to be hired because of your disability. that might be where some of the anger is coming from. or it could be that in the past they have hired disabled employed in the past and it has not worked out. she may be expecting issues with you. not your fault but it happens. you walked in and explained you have issues and possibly need accommodations and you pushed her buttons. my suggestion: go to work. stay with it. do your best. keep up a good attitude. Show them you are a hard worker and don't shy away from a challenge. quitting work will show it got hard and you left after a short time...this will look like crap on your resume (especially if you say she was mean and nasty and yelled..not the grown up thing..it's work, not play time) get the experience, grow the resume. will it be fun? no. will it suck? maybe. but in life you get stuck working at jobs that may not be the best, most enjoyable ever. but $$ pays bills...which in reality is what you need to survive. good luck. |

honestly, if it is a chain place you can run it up to corporate, if it's private, your recourse is to complain to eeo agencies or the media but honestly you probably won't get far. she DID offer you accommodations to listen to the tape, even if they failed to meet your standards.
not saying she is a wonderful employer but my experience is that you can't just run to a lawyer or to hr (if this is a local place they don't have hr)…it is why I asked if this is a first job...work is hard, and not every boss is kind and friendly. not every place is fun. some people are jerks. sorry. being disabled myself I could tell you some horror stories of my own. there are times when you need to suck it up and stand your ground. like I said, work is work, poster didn't answer when I asked if this was her first job..if she is young and asking for special accommodations (albeit legal ones) some places might take offense to that, even tho they should not. it's a pizza place. more then likely if she threatens legal action (assuming it is not a chain) they will say if you are not happy then you are free to leave. she gets bonus points if they fire her..then she should RUN not walk to the lawyer. then there is a case...not a great one but a case. it's nice to say go to hr, go to the media, sue etc but in reality that just doesn't work all the time. some companies are great and will bend over to accommodate you, others not so much. it's hit or miss. even in the government. yes they are required to do so, but that is not a guarantee. do you want to be known as the employee who every time there is an issue they ran to management, or hr if there is one? yes disability can require adjustment at work. been there, got the shirt, but sometimes, the employee has to adjust as well. the onus is not always on the employer. i have severe asthma...in theory my employer should let me know if there will be a hazard in my workplace, but on the other hand, i should be aware enough to know that if i see guys painting to not walk up to them. each side needs to be accountable. |
