Being a recovering alcoholic sober for over 11 years now and surviving child abuse and domestic violence, I have learned a lot about recovery and what it takes to heal.

I currently receive government disability and cannot think of what I would rather do than help others like me decide get better by sharing my story and making a living.

What I am doing now is writing my resume. I am grateful for every website that guides me through the process, especially since being disabled, I haven't worked in over 10 years. The websites are great about showing the most positive accurate wording.

What can I do about my writing? I have written my ebook, plus I blog. I am working on getting more traffic to my blogs, but that takes time.

I also think I am not presenting myself in the right way. I am a recovering alcoholic, yes. In my background I managed my anger badly, resulting in bullying others. I can't remember every time, but I don't think I threatened anyone. I would have vented and said what my family drilled in my head.

I am so much better now, emotionally and mentally. I want to reach others who are like I was, hoping to get through to them so they see that they can get better. They can live a happy life.

Bullying is a huge problem and I think I can help somehow. I also have read that I need an "angle". How do I present what I need to get across that will encourage people to listen and be interested in what I have to say?

I will consider ALL feedback!! I thank you for your time!

Hmm, this is admirable work and interesting. Hard for me to come up with an "angle" since I don't know you well. Anything quirky about you? Humans love to read about quirky people. What about a really wild (and true) story? Even shocking. I mean, sensationalism without substance or accuracy is obviously garbage but a bit of "WOW!" factor coupled with truths might not go astray.

That said, I have never done what you're trying to do. Two people in my life have told me I should write a book about my life, they think people would read it and benefit, but I doubt I ever will.

Props to you Happy Crafter! Sorry I'm not much help but you have my support!

When I first read your post, I didn't think there was anything substantive I could contribute. But coming back, as a result of your "mention", something did occur to me. I think I have, perhaps, mentioned in a previous reply to one of your posts that in my life I have been both abused & the abuser. I was terrorized for 4 years throughout high school by a gang of older boys. Everyone knew what was going on including my parents. But nobody cared. It would, perhaps, be too strong to say this in-&-of-itself destroyed my life. But it certainly didn't help.

A few years ago I happened on a YouTube video by the former Assistant Secretary of Education Kevin Jennings. It was & still remains, for me, one of the most powerful statements regarding bullying I have ever heard. Here's a link to that video:

YouTube

You asked about an "angle". From my perspective, I think the most powerful thing you can do is to write as well as speak from the heart about your experiences. That is what makes Mr. Jenning's talk so overwhelmingly powerful. He spoke from the heart of his experiences.

Question to both of you: Are the "mentions" ok to use? If not, I'll stop; just let me know.

@SilverTrees

Thank you for your kind compliments!! You put a great big smile on my face!

Ok, me quirky? Damn straight, LOLOL I saw a t-shirt once that said: Me weird? Always.
I'll have to think about what I could share from my life that fits what you described. I have several hilarious instances that could fit that description.

@Skeezyks
Thank you for posting that video! I watched it and I agree, it is powerful.

Yes, I remember you telling me about how you were bullied in high school. It breaks my heart to hear that. I, too, bullied a classmate in the second grade. I have to figure out how to track her down so I can grovel and apologize.

Personally, I like the mentions. Without them sometimes I've missed a reply or Q re: my post for weeks. But I read a thread where several people found mentions annoying so each to their own. Also, can you teach me how to do it? I tried once and it did not work. I'll never be your tech-savvy friend!

@SilverTrees

I hear you; I have seen that, some folks don't like them. I respect that choice, but I like them because I know I won't miss a post I need to respond to. This is a big place and the mentions help me!

I am happy to show you how to do them! Ok, you start with the @ sign. You hold down the Shift key and press the number 2 key together. Voila! @

Then directly after the @ with NO spaces, you enter the name of the person you want to send the mention to.

For example, if you want to send it to me, you would type this out:

@HappyCrafter

When you are done writing your message, you click the "Submit Reply" as usual.

Yes I agree with this. I don't subscribe to the threads I reply to. So I typically will never know if someone commented on a reply I wrote unless they "mention" me.
