I could have sworn I posted this earlier.

Oh, well.

Ok, I looked into Ticket to Work and while it has multiple benefits, it would reduce some of my disability income and that scares me.

So, my plan is this for today: finish my resume and post it on here for feedback. Once I am happy with it, I'll start sending it out with the modified versions geared to the company I am applying to. Also, I am changing my blog graphics where it says recovering alcoholic bully to recovering alcoholic REFORMED bully. I might be scaring people off and that won't help anybody.

I am developing material for videos for Youtube and Vimeo to get my name and story out there besides my blogging.

Feedback, ideas? I'm ALL ears!

Working for a living instead of being on disability is a worthy goal. I have heard that if you work or go into the Ticket to Work program, it increases the likelihood that you will eventually lose benefits. My advice is to look at the big picture about how to generate enough income to live. I am working now (had disability) and I can handle some 40 hour a week jobs OK, others not so much. It depends on how tasking the jobs are and how good I am at them. My Spring job ended today (there was only one hour of work left for me) and I am so exhausted. I have to pace myself better than I did during these last few weeks.

Ticket to work just kinda formalizes what has to happen anyway, doesnt it? Either you get off disability or you dont (and i dont think there is a set time, idk, but they might review you?). Any money you make has to be accounted for, if you go over a certain amount, it affects benefits whether you are in the ticket program or not, eventually.

Have you looked at volunteer.com for your area?

I "aged out" of disability into retirement after working for 30+ years, so my knowledge of disability is not the best.

@TunedOut
@unaluna

I looked into the Ticket to Work option and this is what I read:

"The SSA ignores the first $85 you earn each month, and thereafter only half of your earned income is deducted from your benefit amount. As an example, if you earned $885, the SSA would ignore the first $85, and deduct half of the remaining $800. Your disability benefits would be reduced by $400."

So, I decided against that.

My resume is almost done and I have found some websites who hire fluent language tutors in English and in Spanish. So, that's an option.

TunedOut, I hear you! Do you have a summer job lined up? I am determined to get out of poverty! Thank you for your kind words!

unaluna, I looked up volunteer.com and the most recent post is from June of 2017. Is there another one I am missing?

Sorry, volunteer.gov

Not to belabor the point, but the government WILL find out if you earn money, unless of course you are paid "under the table". So the rules of ticket to work re amounts earned will apply anyway. I dont hear that you understand this. Everybody pays (non-employees) with a form 1099, which is reported to the IRS and social security.

Also, you dont have to @ me, i check on "our" threads regularly!

Thank you for responding because you are right, I wasn't understanding.

Ok, I found this:

"The Trial Work Period for SSDI

During the first nine months that you return to work, you will continue to receive your SSDI benefits, even if you work more than the amount that Social Security considers "substantial gainful activity," or "SGA." (SGA generally means that you are earning $1,220 or more per month, in 2019.) At the end of nine months of work, your trial work period is over and your benefits will stop if you are doing SGA.

You are entitled to nine trial work months during your trial work period, and a month doesn't count toward your nine months if you make less than $880 (gross) or if you work less than 80 hours per month in self-employment (irrespective of the amount earned). Your nine trial work months need not be consecutive, so there can be gaps between your trial work months that count toward your nine-month limit."

Does that mean that if I earn less than $880.00 gross per month, my disability income will remain the same amount?

On the self-employment part, what does irrespective of amount earned mean? Do you know?

Thank you, unaluna, for taking the time to make sure I understand this!

If you learn less than $880, the nine-months in 5 years clock doesn't start ticking. So you could always gross around $200 a week and never worry.

I think the "irrespective of the amount earned" re self-employment would cover something like, say you got a $2,000 advance for your book, but youve been working 10 hours a week on it, for 2 months? Thats still 40 hours a month, not 80 hours a month, and not over $880.

Hope this helps!

While on disability, I found a part time job working as a security guard (they paid for the training to get the license) at athletic and other events. Thought this was a good way to have a job that generated less than $880 a month. Then when my Spring job came along (it's for a company called Pearson Pearson Education Careers), I would make sure I didn't work too much so that I made less than $880 a month. I am sure that having work factored into the loss of my disability benefits. I appealed once because I wanted to see their reasoning but didn't appeal further because I thought the decision was fair. I am grateful that I had those benefits for two years. That income and the health benefits I received the 2nd year helped me to have time to begin to understand and stabilize my mental illness. I lost my benefits February 2018 and have noticed that I have stabilized even further since then. Fortunately, my husband supports me so, though I have worked 40 hour weeks sometimes since then, I haven't had to do it every week. The two years on disability was just the beginning of my healing journey but it was important to have that time to heal. When you work a 40 hour week, their is less time to work on your physical and mental health.

I just signed a 6 month contract (which I can renew if I perform well) with a company called VIPKid VIPKID Teach English Online to Chinese & Korean Students | Teacher'''s Portal where I will teach Chinese students to speak English. You have to market yourself (create an introductory video, etc.) My first student signed up for a slot this Sunday! I opened slots during the time of greatest need which is 7-9 AM Eastern time (7-9 PM Beijing time). They teach in other countries too and recently entered the Korean market. It took me about a month to certify after I passed the interview. The certification involved proving that I could teach the curriculum well enough. I teach from home. If you have a bachelor's degree, you could work for Pearson (most of their work is only during the Spring grading student achievement tests) and VIPKids too! There are lots of Youtube videos about how VIPKid works. Since you have to build your business slowly and get certified first, VIPKid might be a good thing to try while you are on disability if you have a degree.

One thing to keep in mind if you work while getting disability is that you have to submit a report every month detailing the income you earned.

Hey, TunedOut!!

How are you doing?

I did find lots of tutoring jobs for folks like me who don't have a degree. Have you done any classes yet? That sounds FUN!

I did not know about the monthly report submission, thank you for that! xoxox

I feel great this morning! Slept to 5:45 AM--that's a whole lot of sleep for me.

I now have 3 classes filled. Two are on Sunday. I am studying and thinking about how I will teach the material. Plus taking a teacher workshop today. I feel like if I am prepared and competent, the parents will give me good ratings which will attract more students. I am excited about the whole thing. I am pretty good at teaching students one on one. I was a Title One teacher for a while and my job was to tutor and test struggling students. I usually taught small groups but also tutored and tested students one on one. My weakness as a teacher was managing disciplinary issues while trying to teach an entire class (when I was a regular elementary class teacher with many students). I have already started preparing for the 1st class....

That's Awesome!! Look at you doing so well and growing!! That's a wonderful feeling, isn't it? How was teaching the struggling students? When they do well, that's a great feeling of accomplishment.

Did you have many you could not help?

With struggling students, I just tried to make it fun. When you are struggling in school, for one reason or another, there is usually something in your life (stress at home or a genetic/physical/mental learning disorder) that can make it harder to enjoy some aspects of school. Hopefully, having fun gave them an intrinsic motivation or curiousity that might help them in the long run. Sometimes you don't know if you helped. Hopefully, I left them with something that helped. Do you remember the M.A.S.H. episode where the psychiatrist referenced "planting a seed inside" (he covered his heart I think) that might later bloom later. That is what teachers hope they have done.
