I believe my coworkers stole my camera.

I have a very clean house, always keep my silver hand held digital Nikon camera in my purse, never leave it laying around. When I came home from my last shift, I noticed my camera was missing. I checked my car, the couch cushions, every nook and cranny in my house (believe me) and it's nowhere to be found. I was not using it or playing with it at work either, and there are no lockers in the office where the women store their purses while they work. My coworkers gave me an especially hard time that day and were huddled together, laughing at me between spells of yelling at me, verbally attacking me, etc. and one of them disappeared into the office for a very long time. She is not a manager, but seems to enjoy pretending she is to look high and mighty. In retrospect, I think she might have tampered with the security cameras and gotten into my personal belongings and stolen my camera. It's a silver handheld digital Nikon. It's gone, which is completely bizarre.

Today I asked the store manager if he'd seen my camera anywhere and he showed me the cupboards in which lost things are usually stored, and I didn't see it but his tone was very clipped, quiet and sheepish as he said no, he didn't see it --- as if he had no clue what I was talking about. It seemed like he was going out of his way to play dumb/innocent. When I was sent on my 10-minute break, I went to the office to get my purse and dinner from the cooler and he looked at me when I was on my way there and asked "What are you doing?" (paranoid much?) and I told him I was taking my break and he said "....okay?" and moved along, but the office door was open with a chair blocking the entrance. Later, I asked another manager in charge if she'd seen it --- super sweet, not accusing anyone of theft and hypothesizing that it might've spilled out of my bag on my way out --- with the woman who was harassing me right next to us within earshot. Later, that woman kept hanging around, against the wall with her hands behind her back, doing nothing and she wouldn't look at me. I find it very odd. My dad seems to think they got my camera, too.

I'm just so upset right now, I don't know what to do or think. Precious photos from once-in-a-lifetime trips are there that haven't been loaded into my computer, that camera was a birthday gift and I'll never be able to afford another one. Even if gifted one, it won't make up for the memories now lost.

I am VERY careful with my belongings and never lose anything. I'm not careless, messy, disorganized, hasty or forgetful. That is my prized possession. I wouldn't have brought it with me if I didn't come on a whim because someone needed their shift covered, and I didn't come home with my camera. I noticed it was missing right away.

I'm just so very sad about all of this. I'm probably never gonna get it back.

If it's valuable you could file a police report. Not that it would find your camera, but at least your managers would sit up straight and stop this weird behavior. Also, I would demand a safe place to store my belongings during work. It's unacceptable that others have access to your belongings while you are working, especially considering there has been a theft. I might actually, at this point, tell the managers that I believe it was stolen during my shift because it was in the purse when I arrived and not in my purse when I left, and I was trying to be nice about it when asking and not accuse anyone, but it was stolen, and I need to file a report.

Just my take.

yes call pd and file a report. no drama, no tears, no long going sad story, jut the facts. camera was in the purse and then it wasn't. you can mention other's behavior bbut that is a side note, you have no idea if that is real or not.

put up a sign with a reward offered. might work. next time bring only your id and leave it in your pants,,if there is not secure storage for things don't store stuff while on shift. it is an accident waiting to happen.

My mom suggested a reward sign too and she actually made one and printed it out for me last night. I'll look into the police report. Would that be a good idea if I have current lawsuit in process due to negligence of safety procedures resulting in hearing loss and injury against my former workplace?

I worked at a juice bar for 2 years and they refused to use the blender covers because they were lazy. The sounds produced reached harmful decibel levels. I now have high frequency hearing loss, chronic tinnitus that hasn't stopped for a minute and I no longer know what true silence sounds like, and I have a hypersensitivity to sounds that I've never had before and causes me pain throughout my daily life.

can you prove that the blender noise levels were in a high enough decibel range tp produce hearing damage? did you test them with a noise monitor? did osha get involved? again just curious, as a former health & safety professional it is difficult to prove the connection between one & another without verified data. if there is no testing then there could be also other multiple factors that could cause damage as well. not saying you are lying but have seem this argument in the past...
did you document it right after or during your employment there?

During, yes. I have everything documented. I saw not only my GP but an ENT specialist and he concluded that this was caused by my work environment. OSHA hasn't been involved yet but nothing else could have done this to me. I was never like this before working there, and it was during + after working there that it happened and my hearing has never been the same. I don't have loud earbuds in or even own an iPod/walkman, I don't go to concerts or performances or have the TV set loud.

So far I've had my deposition but they asked none of that, instead they were digging into my personal history from before I was even in high school and it was all completely irrelevant to my case. I hope this doesn't give them more leverage if I notify the police.

If you're sensitive to loud noises, why would you work at a place that is notoriously loud?

And if you knew there was no locker, why would you keep your most precious valuables inside your purse out in the open where anybody could grab it? Why not keep it locked in your car or not bring it at all?

It seems you're setting yourself up to get involved in unnecessary situations.

I kind of rushed into work because I was called in, but usually I don't bring such precious items with me. It was the only place that would hire me at the time because it's been hard for me to find a job with no inside connections, buddies etc. (small town, that's how it goes) and I've been desperate for income. It's not just "loud" noises, it's all sounds that are sharp and sudden, even voices or doors and lids closing or keys jingling.

No disrespect meant but I do not think that the OP is to blame for someone stealing her camera. Sure, she probably should have left it at home but the fact is someone went in her bag and stole it. They didnt steal her wallet so it seems like the nasty coworkers are just trying to F with her.

Thanks, @sarahsweets. I think so too. For the last few days they've been cutting my shift in half for no reason, sending me home 20 minutes after my 10 minute break and not letting me serve or bus tables and I think that's because they don't want me to get tips (or decent pay).
