I am hiring for a position below me for one of my clients. In reviewing the resumes, I find myself feeling sometimes competitive with the candidates, even when I shouldn't because none of them are me and have my skills. I also find myself getting irritated and the VAST number of resumes I'm getting that do not have the required skills on the job description. It's a communications job, but it requires experience with writing scientific and medical research for publication. We are not interested in hiring anyone who does not have direct experience in this field because it is too much of a gamble and the position is not entry level and available for that kind of training. But all these people applying are "social media managers," which is distinctly NOT what we are hiring for. It's like they don't even read the job description. (I have nothing against social media managers - social media management is a large part of my job. It's just not what we are looking for.)

I think it's not that I'm feeling competitive just like I guess it sort of offends me that people are applying for a job they have no qualifications for, and it's kind of insulting to me (that's how I feel) because they think they can do this job with no experience, and I know exactly what kind of knowledge and skills this job requires. It sort of feels, in an unintentional way, like someone insulting my work and denigrating it as easier than it is.

So I dunno. I'm just getting this off my chest so I can process it and move on. I don't need to doubt my abilities or let my self confidence take a hit because people are desperate for a job and applying to everything they see and not doing anything to tailor their resumes.

When I used to do hiring, I'd have that happen. People would apply with none of the related education/experience asked for in the job description. It was a bit over entry level, so we weren't so demanding, but we at least wanted some related experience. It was editing/proofreading along with data entry and we got resumes from car mechanics, things like that.

I think your last sentence explains well what's happening. Some people are desperate to work and just apply to as many things as they can find, without much thought or resume tailoring. Glad you could vent here. It was annoying to have to go through those resumes, so after skimming and seeing that they didn't meet the requirements, I moved them quickly into the NO pile.

Of course, then we have the other side of the coin, my boss, who has decided to do the opposite, completely ignore the requirements in the job description and hire unqualified people. Grrrr!

Yeah, I think writing about it helped me understand my frustration. I get that people are just hitting apply to everything because they want a new job or job at all. (100% unemployment my arse.) I realized what is frustrating me is the unintended insult I feel when people do that because I've worked very hard to get where I am and paid all the dues and pushed to be the top of the game.

However, I have gotten a couple of promising resumes of people who actually do have the required skills, so it's not a total waste. But we have had the same problem of unqualified people being hired. Not so much for any nefarious reason but more so because for a while we were having trouble defining what this job was, but also, my boss was doing the hiring and I wasn't involved, and I really need to be the person who vets these people. It's difficult because she has a blind spot with hiring, and then she tries to pressure me to agree with her. And the last time I kind of got steamrolled over and then sort of got blamed for the disaster that ended up being. So I'm being very vocal this time around because I will not have another bad hire. If we don't feel 100% on this person, I'd rather NOT hire than have to spend more of my time dealing with someone's ********.
