Taught my first online class but due to technology issues--no money made. Why! My settings were wrong during the first scheduled class causing my microphone not to work. Since back to back classes were scheduled, I had to apologize to my first student and move on. I was able to fix the issue for the 2nd class and thought it went OK. The thing is, if you miss or have a technology issue on your side for a class, you are fined. Nothing earned but experience and the interaction. I have 5 more classes scheduled during the next 7 days. Will not have my schedule allow back to back classes until I get more experience. (though there is one upcoming day like that) I hope I have no more technology mishaps. If I do, my days in this new job are numbered......

Technically, things are going smoothly now. I panicked on that very first class and was unable to quickly change the settings on my computer. I am not sure why the settings had changed that day.

I am not exactly making a killing from this job. So far, I have only earned $54; however, I do enjoy the kids. I am comfortable teaching but there is always room for improvement so I am taking the free workshops and certifications that the company offers. I hope to have more students eventually.

Thanks for asking Skeezyks!

I am not making much money at my new endeavor (I only taught 1 hour today for a total of $18 ) but now that I am not nervous about the technology--that part is pretty easy. The hard part of the job is getting students because there are loads of teachers.

In order to get more students, I plan to redo my profile video. I am not that smooth in front of the camera yet. I ordered a 14 inch pirate puppet from Amazon with a hook hand and a peg leg. I named him Captain Peg. It came just in time. I got my first young student today--only 6 years old.

Most of the students I have been getting are 8-11 years old so I asked what my tags are -- the company picks them based on their impression of you -- my tags were experienced, detail oriented, and speaking and discussion: I was surprised about the detail oriented tag but, hey I like it then I asked them to add supportive and topic-oriented.

The student loved the puppet much more than me. Frequently, when Captain Peg was gone, she asked, "Where is the puppet?" I had the puppet be the one who handed out her rewards. She kept giving the puppet rewards (mostly food--she described all the rewards in English.) I am not charismatic in front of the camera but Captain Peg IS.

This sounds fun! Not many of us can say we are having this much fun at work. Lol. I think in time you will likely start to make a little more money. I look forward to hearing how it goes.

All my students are wonderful. I have two 6 year old students and must admit that this age is so much fun. It feels like playing. My background is an ocean with a wonderful 3D paper great white shark I put together, a penguin island (the penguins are removable), a pirate ship, fish, etc. Yesterday, when one earned penguins as rewards, I asked her where to put it--"Next to the shark?" She would tell me where "China", "the ship", "the island" etc. Then she makes a reward for me like, "What should I draw (on my incomplete face picture)?" I am smiling the rest of the day after teaching but usually just have one or two classes a day but I do think it will increase.

My Chinese New Year background, the dragon looks like either a
baby dragon or a dragongator (think I like my last background better
but this one is just for the holidays) :

With the virus disrupting everyone's lives in China , I can teach as much as I want. I have been teaching 4 classes a day because I fear if I take too many classes, the quality might go down but the students are so sweet, it is tempting to take on more.

In July, when I was diagnosed with cancer, I was having to schedule a lot of last minute medical appointments which caused me to have to cancel many of my classes which hurt my statistics. Your stats are one of the things that parents likely look at when booking teachers. I was also nervous about what my treatment would do to my appearance. Recently, after one of my former students made a bunch of booking requests, I finally opened some slots again. I feel like I do look older and will have to wear a hat or scarf but am teaching again (the first time since July) today. I also noticed that another former student booked a slot last night. I may be living with what I have for years so I need to stop limiting myself.

I hear you re technology. What a pain...We have something wrong with technology every single day. It could be something goes wrong and could be we are doing something wrong, it’s often funny. Today I was upside down on the screen because I didn’t change my camera from document reader setting. Lol

Enjoy it!

PS I hope your treatment went well

Sadly, just prior to my going on vacation, VIPKid made the following announcement: "Starting August 7, 2021, students in China will be unable to purchase new class packages with foreign VIPKid teachers outside of China." I did not teach on vacation and had a class earlier this morning that I enjoyed so much. I do not know what was factored into the Chinese government's decision to no longer allow outsiders to teach their students but I will miss having these interactions with all the lovely young people who blessed my life with their smiles, laughter and conversation. I taught a range of ages from 6 to 14 years old (though not many were 13-14 years old).
