1. Because June is Pride month.
2. To declare that they will no longer fire someone just for being gay? If you were the person being fired in the past, you might think that was a big deal. |

Because it means declaring themselves and equal opportunity employer.
Questions: have you ever lost a job for being hetero sexual? have you ever been kicked out of your family for being hetero sexual? have you ever had to hide your heterocexuality for fear of being ostracised? have you ever been bullied or physically assaulted for your heterosexuality? This is why it is important that all people, regardless of sexuality, gender, skin colour, religion, and ethnicity see that Pride flag. They need the reassurance that their workplace is a safe place. |

or what if your wife was denied health benefits? say you have a child but your wife or partner was not allowed into the hospital to visit? or even make decisions in care? or into the school to talk with their teacher?
or hold hands in public? kiss? buy a house? shop? pride month means much to those of us of the community. read up on it. it is a HUGE deal. nothing to be ignorant about. |

While not part of the Community I am a HUGE supporter. I recognise that my own friends, acquaintances, and co-workers have a tough slog in life on account of who they are. If I can make a person feel better by holding their hands up high, wearing a t-shirt, walking in a parade, and handing out hugs to those who don't get them at home then I feel I have done something positive in the world and made it all the better for it. I embrace this month full force not just for my acquaintances who are open about themselves but to give strength to those who feel they can't be. On a side note, I gave out free 'mom hugs' for our local Pride Day. What tears it brought to my eyes the number of people I hugged that day who told me they would never get them from their own family. You should realise that you likely know of such people in your own life. Be proud of the fact your employer and others recognise all of this and do what they can to make sure that all employees feel welcome in their business and not afraid. That is what this is all about. Personally I think it fabulously cool that a business would show such support. |
