I got into work today and my manager was very confused and said “oh, I just called you and asked you to come in because I thought you were off.” I said “was I supposed to be off?” And she quickly said “no.” Ok. Then why did you call me? I had my phone on silent and I checked it when I got to the break room and sure enough there was a voice message from her 5 minutes ago asking me if I would come in because they had a call off. But I was scheduled today. So I had no idea what the manager was talking about. Kind of rude anyways to call me at 5:15 in the morning if she thought I had the day off but then she said I didn’t have the day off. What???? Does this make sense to anyone?

I would take this as a red flag. It sounds like she is embarrassed that she made a mistake. This is not a good sign because people like this will often try to blame others to hide their own mistakes. This is not confusion or rudeness, this is calculated deflection and can spread to all aspects of your work. good luck.

THIS! The recruiter who tricked me did some calculated deflection today when I called him out on his bait-n-switch in front of his branch manager.

He called me two days ago to tell me about a "temp" job for $17/hr that was an admin role. He sent me a link to the company's website but not the full job description (red flag but I ignored it). I foolishly went to the temp agency today thinking I was going to prep with him for an interview.

But that's NOT what happened.

The ole bait and switch. I arrived this morning and he told me his branch manager would sit in on my interview pre. They waited 30 minutes before they told me it was not a temp role, but a direct hire role for $15/hr as a CUSTOMER SERVICE person at a copy center. Not what I was originally told over the phone by the recruiter.

So, when I called the recruiter out in front of the branch manager, he tried to deflect it back on to me as my serious misunderstanding of his LIE that it was an admin role and a temp job.

So, I declined the direct hire role and asked them both if that meant they would severe ties with me now. After all, it's my right to say "no" to the wrong job opportunity. I have a feeling they won't make any effort to contact me about temp jobs in the near future, after this morning but that's ok as there are other temp agencies out there (who probably do the same bait and switch calculated deflection).

I was pretty disgusted that he tried to pull that on me -- bring me in this morning under the false assumption he was prepping me for a simple temp job interview but that was not the case.

Does he think I'm THAT dumb? That I would just accept this direct hire role for mere pennies for a job that I would be miserable in? This is what I despise about working as a temp contractor. You are treated like a brainless slave with no rights or power over your own choices for roles they present you with.

I can see where this would be true with her. Today she asked me to leave something where it was. And then I confirmed what she had said a few seconds later and she snapped (my coworkers words not mine) at me “no do it.” It’s like she just told me to leave it on the table and then she quickly told me no do it. Weird.

She sounds super passive aggressive. Like, she likes to manipulate her staff. Yikes. I hope you can find another, better job for yourself. She sounds like a very toxic supervisor.
