I've been on SSI for a long time, but it's leaving me unsatisfied with my life. I lost my last two jobs, including an AmeriCorps position that I only lasted for two weeks at, because of my poor physical shape. My degree is Zoology and I have extensive bird/animal knowledge... Extensive as in high suspected aspie by pretty much everyone, and also my BP to deal with...

Anyway there is a long-term, but part time AmeriCorps at a zoo that said that if their funding comes through I would probably be hired along with 15 other people. Anyway AmeriCorps I'm attracted to because those positions you can get a small stipend and earn experience, but keep your disability and medical benefits. I did bring up what happened with the one last year and the zoo said they could easily accommodate my limitations...

I've had highly similar internships/jobs in the past, but like over 10 years ago before my bipolar really hit me bad. I'm nervous as hell, and I'm currently a caretaker for a very ill husband, but he's willing to have someone else take care of him to see me suceed, but I have guilt...

Help!

Oh I'll add the position if I get it would require me to move... Before the lease is up in my apartment so I might have to have husband stay here living on his own SSI...

Hmm, I'd take a good hard look at the numbers if I were you. Having to pay for a second place to live plus assistance for your husband for only part time work that pays a small stipend doesn't sound like a very stable situation financially. Ultimately, it's your decision, obviously, but I'd be quite cautious about accepting a situation like that.

so you will need to pay for a caretaker, a move, new living arrangements for you all for a job with a small stipend? doesn't sound like such a great deal. I get you want a job, and in a zoo sounds great but I would sit down and calmly crunch the #'s. disability doesn't offer any flexibility. neither does a small stipend. what if there is an emergency and caregiver can't make it to work? or prices increase? what will you do?

I get those jobs that sound pretty cool....but remember it all boils down to a job. chances are you aren't going to have a glamor job because you aren't a full time permanent keeper. and is this a permanent position?

nothing we say here can change your mind if it is set, but still I would give it thought.

The numbers make more sense if I take my husband with me... But at the same time there is a lease, and AmeriCorps positions are never permanent, this one is 10 months.
