I accepted a new position in 2016 as an HR (department of one). Since 2016, I have experienced workers threatening other workers with physical harm, workers harassing other workers, gang threats against managers, fights in the workplace and strangers coming onto the work property with guns looking for gang members. It's been very scary at times but I have been able to turn the culture around and now the workplace is much safer (all done as a department of one). With that being said, I've experienced extreme anxiety, panic attacks and my depression worsened. Recently my manager has been micro managing me as the workplace has been experiencing a high level of turnover. With all of my best efforts to get the talent that we need I haven't been able to hire very many people. The manager is making me feel as if I'm not doing enough to get the talent that they need through the doors and with that I had two panic attacks in one week and my blood pressure was high. I don't know if it's worth the money to stay at this employer but I'm scared that if I leave I won't find a job. What do you think I should do?

Look for a job while keeping your present job until you find another job. Until you find a less stressful job, do yoga and meditation or aerobic exercise such as walking 30 minutes per day, if doctor approved, to help lower stress.

What are your HR policies for employee behavior like this?

I can only guess at how stressful your job is and I’m guessing it’s very stressful. You have to deal with a whole lot of nonsense every day because you are dealing with people constantly. Is it possible to start taking some classes or start looking for another type of job?
