Hi,
Sorry, I'm sure this gets posted about a lot. There are certain aspects of working life that me feel anxious, stressed, isolated, low. Please, does anyone have any tips for dealing with feeling like this? Thanks |

i am not sure what things at work causes you to feel those things. i can share that, for me, working in an office, just the thought of who to eat lunch with was a daily stressor. there were some people who just ate at their desks but then there were others who ate together. i did feel a certain amount of obligation in the beginning to "be sociable" and eat with the lunch group but i am shy and would have preferred to eat by myself or just with a few close coworkers. i think it all came from rejections in my childhood because i was iced out by my sisters (they felt i was mom's favorite) and my mom was unintentionally emotionally neglectful and distant. i always feel like an outsider.
in case this might help, i realized i could not control how others acted but i could control how i acted so i just tried to be nice to everyone as my many years of depression made me realize one never knows what invisible pain another person might be going through. anyways, hope this helps you a little. please feel free to expand on what might be bothering you at work. |

I think it really depends on the specifics. We can give you general ideas like meditate, yoga, self talk, all day long, but none of it will help unless you can apply it. Sometimes it's easier to bring a few specific examples out so people can help you troubleshoot you know?

My boss suffers from stress and has been off sick before. She can be very snappy and critical. She's not all the time, but you can't really ask her questions and she'll criticse me about little things. She does say well done sometimes, but it's the fear of criticism that sticks with me. Today I had to really bite my lip to stop myself from snapping back. She has also caused great upset to my colleagues. I would say that perhaps she's more suited to paperwork rather than managing actual people. I'm very introverted and any kind of mental work causes me stress. Just having conversations can be exhausting. I'm probably at my best when left to do something practical in peace. Childishly, I don't like wearing a uniform. I feel more uptight and less like myself. It's also gets too hot and I overheat easily. I worry about heatwaves. Again, childishly, I never really like leaving the house. I used to sometimes refuse to go school when I was very young, I don't feel like I've grown out of that feeling. I thought I might mature, but inside I'm still that little girl crying her eyes out because she hates any kind of pressure or expectation. |

Lately when I get upset about the pressure we keep getting from our managers I remind myself that they are being pressured too. The whole reason they are coming down so hard on us is because someone is coming down hard on them. Then I really appreciate the managers who are always fair and reasonable because I realize that they are likely being pressured by their boss and choosing not to do the same thing to me. It’s the same with coworkers. Someone is pressuring or stressing them out and that’s the reason I’m getting stress from them. Sometimes it helps me and sometimes it doesn’t. The workplace really can be the biggest source of anxiety and I wish I knew the secret to better coping skills. Some of my coworkers have told me they drink to cope with the stress but that’s not an option I would like so I just try to talk or think my way through the issues.

i also struggle with anxiety, and deal with a ton of physical ailments. i work in a cooler and freezer, so now im putting on layers to keep from freezing and even tho autumn is here we are having 80 degree days at the moment. and ive managed to come down sick with a cold. I'm super uncomfortable at work even tho our uniform is only a vest, its my added layers that burden me. My area assistant manager, and department manager are pretty awesome, but we have a few dull tacks on our team, and some of us end up with extra work because others cant grasp tasks that need to be done. this alone drives me bats@it. stocking, filling already assigned places, and putting products where they belong is not a hard task, visually seeing you cant fit x there without risk of breaking cold chain etc is not rocket science. Not understanding your handheld device is no excuse and ask for help to learn how to interpret the numbers, etc. I mean ive only been there 6 months but if i come across something wonky i ask questions i dont just bullsh@t my way through it. sorry about the rant, but discomfort at work is a thing, we create, and others often create for us.. oftentimes making things much harder than they need to be.
