Hello I have a problem and was wondering if anyone could help me figure out a solution. Ok, 3 years ago my sister committed suicide and it completely messed my life up. It made me really depressed, gave me anxiety and ptsd, even high blood pressure with stokes and everything. I was in tons of meds. I begam to lose everything. My job. My car, my home, even my girlfriend left me. It was horrible. Then a year later mysisters ex husband calls me and says he has something for me that was my sisters and i needed to go out to Oklahoma and pick it up. I lived in Cali. I went amd he gave me a husky puppy named jasmine that my sister had gotten a few months before. At first i didnt want it BUT it chamged my life completely. It has now been 2 years since ice had jasmine and I DONT TALE ANY MEDICATION AT ALL FOR ANYTHING AND IM DOING GOOD.
Ok, i told you all that to now ask my question. I am now looking into truck driving and have wamted to do this for a long time. But I HAVE TO HAVE MY DOG WITH ME! I havent had to go to a mental health doctor now fpr 2 years but the truck driving place wants a mental health form filled out in order for jasmine to go with me. I camt find anyone who will fill it out for me so i can go to this school. Cam anyone help me please? I camt leave her behind and its killing me trying to find a mental health doctor that will listen to me long enough to understand what is going on! Anything or any idea would greatly appreciated!!

Hello Tmj: I'm sorry I don't know as there is much I can offer with regard to this. However I noticed this is your first post here on PC. So... welcome to Psych Central.

It's been a few days now since you posted this. Perhaps you've been able to resolve the problem by now? Based on my own personal experience with psychiatrists (I presume that's what you are referring to as "mental health doctors") I'm not surprised you've had the experience you've had. All any psychiatrist I saw did was to prescribe & monitor psych med's. And my appointments never lasted more than perhaps 15 minutes if that. In my own experience everything else is left to mental health therapists.

So my only thought, with regard to your dilemma, would be to start with a mental health therapist. And, ideally, it might be one who is affiliated with a mental health clinic that also has a psychiatrist on staff. Then, perhaps, the therapist might be able to facilitate getting what you need signed by the psychiatrist. I realize this is a roundabout way to proceed & may potentially be time consuming. But, again based on my own experience, it may be at least one possible way of ending up with what you want. Of course, the other possibility, I would suppose, might be to see if you can get a GP to sign off on the required form if that would be acceptable. Perhaps other PC members will have other suggestions they can offer. I hope you find PC to be of benefit.

Maybe try backing into it. See if you can find out who trains emotional support animals in your area. Been a long time since I was in Bakersfield, so don't really know if you will find someone there. Might have to look toward LA. Which I know is a drive. Anyhow, I would call a couple of those training facilities and tell them what is going on with you. See if they have a suggestion of a therapist or psychologist or psychiatrist who is well-versed and knows about emotional support animals. That might be a way to get it done.

If all else fails, I would email Hope For Paws in LA and ask them if they have any suggestions. Tell them briefly about what your dog has done for you. They know everyone and everything about dogs in SoCal. Good luck!!
