So I only got one shift this week. But they called me yesterday and asked if I could come in today. I looked at the schedule and saw that everyone was working 3-5 days this week. I caught the manager on my way to the work station and asked why I was only scheduled one day he said “I had to cut pay roll, but your back to 2 days next week.” I said “but, why am I only working 2 days?” He then smiled and said “I have a budget too.” I have no idea what that means. He was the one who I gave the paperwork from social security I needed them to fill out. They cut my hours as soon as they filled out that paper. I asked but he wouldn’t give me an answer as to why my hours were cut, but no one else’s. They even hired a new guy to fill in on the days I’m not there. I don’t want to seem like I’m being pushy by asking though.

Do you think they could be discriminating against you already?

They possibly could be discriminating. How can I be sure that’s the real reason though?

That's the tricky part. I wish it wasn't but I've seen it too many times myself.

Do keep a notebook for yourself to document specifics. You may just use it for yourself to get a better picture of what is going on, or it may be helpful if you find that you are specifically targeted. Meanwhile, do your best at work. If you need & want the work do fill in for last minute, otherwise be unable to...
Focus on the job when working. (tho' I say "do" it is just a suggestion)

If you want more hours and he is refusing, but hiring additional people, I do think you have a right to know why he won't give you more hours. And if he is hiring more people while refusing to give you more hours, I think you could, in this instance, go to HR and ask for an explanation. I think you have to push for an explanation, and be a little pushy, because if he's trying to skirt the discrimination then he's going to continue to not give you an answer. If you are in the US, you could file a complaint with the EEOC about discrimination, especially since he cut your hours directly after you requested he fill out paperwork for social security disability reporting. If he won't give you a direct answer of why he won't give you more than 2 days of work, then you need to take it up the chain, politely and respectfully, to get an answer.

Like winter said, take lots of notes. Document everything. It can be difficutl to tell for sure if what you are seeing discrimination, but in my experience, having been through it, once you really start thinking about it as a possibility, wondering about it, there is a pretty good chance it is happening to you. It's a lot like cheating--there are signs and "weird" things that happen but ultimately, it is the feeling in your gut that you must go with.

That’s awful. If he cut your hours and hired someone else that’s horrible. I would ask a direct question about that.

Yeah and then with this recession they are talking about I may not even have a job in a month or so. Plus they are talking about cuts to Medicare and social security. I mean, how will I even survive if all this stuff happens

The new guy works opposite days of me. I work Mondays And Thursdays. He works Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. So I’m pretty sure they brought him in because of me.

When they cut hours in retail, they sometimes cut only those who makes more. They might even hire someone to work instead of you because they can pay him less. I have a side job in retail for years now. I only work about 9 hours a week and they would cut that every January/February. Then it goes back to normal. They told us this year they are over budget by a ton so they cut it back badly. I didn’t work couple of weeks at all. Now if I rely on it to pay bills I’d be livid. But that’s retail for you. Every year same story
