Right now in these difficult times where people are losing their jobs because of this damn pandemic, I wish I did not have a job. I work at this casual fast food place and I hate it ever since I began working there since last August. I have not been to work since mid March because my hours were cut to 0 but this week I am being brought back. I am college student and I feel so out of place there. In the beginning of March, I got accepted into my college’s honors program. Last week, I won a $1,200 scholarship from my program department. I am going to receive even more money from the honors program to cover my tuition for the upcoming school year.
I know this is the wrong mentality, but I think I am too good for my job. Going to work there feels so demoralizing. I am having a lot trouble when it comes finding a remote internship and it looks like I have to be stuck there for the foreseeable future. I just want to quit out of anger. After I got into the honors program, I began to take the job less seriously. Obviously I am not going to make mistakes on purpose but if they happen I don’t care. I am so much better than my coworkers there. Its full of people that either dropped out of high school or decided not to go to college after graduation. It is very demoralizing the thought of having to return to the place I hate the most. |

I'm sorry, I can understand how you feel. Do you see any positives at all in the situation?

Something positive is that I have good things going on such as being in the honors program and getting money for it. The problem is that my crappy job and my academic abilities don’t match. My job makes me look hopeless if I take out the honors program out of the equation. I have been to work to twice this week and I feel like its a torture.

I think it is absolutely wonderful that you are a genius and people have been throwing buckets of money at you to get your education. That is wonderful. It sounds like maybe you have not had enough appreciation in your life (I mean other than the various scholarships and awards) so let me congratulate you on being such a terrific academic. I value education, so your stellar accomplisments deserve recognition and applause. In my opinion, people have inherent worth and are all entitled to respect and dignity. I never regret being respectful, although there have been times when I have had abuse rained down on me; some people consider treating others decently as some sort of weakness. I do feel sorry for those people. Since you think a food service job is beneath you, it makes sense for you to quit so that someone who actually needs the work can take your place. I worked a food service job while I was in college. It was a wonderful education in and of itself. I learned a lot about people. I might do it again part time; I like people. Do yourself a favor, quit the job before you do or say something you might regret. I'm sure since you're such a superior person you don't want to harm others.
