My dream has always been to get a graduate degree, but my ornithology career was derailed by physical fitness problems and my bipolar...
I've been out of work for a long time but I saw an ad for a local job doing plant research... Now plants is a secondary interest of mine and my past research involved some plant stuff too... But there is such a huge gap in my work history how do I explain it??? Now my bipolar isn't obvious and is pretty well managed, but my autism is pretty obvious but so is my intelligence so I don't think it's an issue... But I'm obviously overweight and if there is any type of physical labor involved with the job I might be in trouble... Tips??? __________________ It's as simple as I love birds...

Plenty of people with bipolar disorder work full time jobs successfully and manage their disorders. Same with autism. It may require you to build some social skills to interact with coworkers, but it's possible.
As far as being overweight, yes, that can be an issue if there is any physical labor required for the job. However, perhaps wanting to go back into the field and do this kind of work could be a motivation for helping to improve your fitness? Typically if a gap in work history is caused by illness, you can answer that simply by saying "from X year to X year I was undergoing treatment for an illness, and now I am recovered and returning to the work force." I would not give any details on what kind of illness, and they can't ask you. When I took off almost 2 years due to illness that's the phrasing I used, and I was able to find work. It does depend on how long the illness was, you might need to give a little more explanation about how you're hoping to re-enter the workforce - like having kept skills sharp by studying and such. Hope this is helpful. Good luck! __________________ What if I fall? Oh, my dear, but what if you fly? I didn't get that job... But my work prospects in this area are kinda slim because of the very small size of the town I live in. I used to work full time too doing bird research and some environmental education work. One of my social workers said she wants to see me in graduate school, maybe???
