My boss is reviewing his written annual review of me on Thursday.
My boss has been trying to undermine my success at work for over a year now. Last year in my annual review, he watered down and omitted several of my greatest achievements, so i am anticipating that he will do the same this year. What is the best and most diplomatic way to address it, IF he does this again? I want to address it immediately and while we are on the call together. Last year, I did bring up one omission, and he revised and included the achievement I brought up to him. So I believe I have the right to bring this up again to him, if he repeats the same kind of omissions. A raise is usually included with the annual review, and is based on your achievements, so that's why it's important for me to address this. I want to be upfront, yet diplomatic. Yes - 3.5%. HR told me not to expect much this year due to the economy and COVID. So I'm anticipating a lower raise. But still, I want my achievements to be accurately documented nonetheless, especially because I'd like a promotion, IF I am to remain within the company longer.

If he omits them, ask him to include them during your meeting just like you did last year.

Yeah, I get an electronic copy for my records. Everyone gets one, including my CEO, who also reviews it and agrees to the raise percentage.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to confront your boss. I don’t know if it’s even a good idea to address the issue at all, if it opens a can of worms that potentially backfires on you.
You know he has it in for you and you don’t know why. Thanks, Tisha. I agree that confronting the issue may not be the best idea. I do think if he omits several of my biggest achievements, that I must say something. I will not allow this a-hole to continue to undermine and bully me. This is a part of standing up for myself against a nefarious, sneaky and bully boss, which is what he is. And since I want a promotion at some point, it is most important to get my achievements all documented within my review. Or else my CEO will not be aware of them. This is critical for me.

Also, I know the reason WHY my boss is trying to undermine my success. He fears that I could take his job or that they would no longer need him IF i were promoted to a Director role. The last Senior Strategist, which is my position, WAS promoted to Director. My boss told me as soon as he moved into his new position as the Director of Web Services that he doesn't need another Director. He strategically moved another strategist into a managerial position to cover his bases. I see right through him and what he's doing. He knows that I could very well be a Director in my dept and lead my entire dept because I have ten years of experience that he does not have himself. He is threatened by my very existence. And I also shine in what I do. I am the top performer in my whole dept. And he knows this, yet refuses to publicly acknowledge it.

At the end of our evaluations our boss always asks: do you have anything to add? Questions? Evidence of something you did? Etc Then we tell “by the way I did XYZ.” Etc
Our boss always says that she might forget or miss something special or “above and beyond” that we did so we should bring it to evaluation meeting and show it to her or tell her that something was omitted I’d never ask why my boss omitted something, but I sure would bring up that I did something or achieved something she didn’t include in the evaluation so she can include it. |

If he doesn’t say “do you have any questions”, then you could just say “I have a question, can we include my success in XYZ area”. He’d have to include it or explain why he wouldn’t
What kind of raises do they normally give? 3.5% is just a raise for inflation if you work in private sector (public like state or federal jobs might give no inflation raise for years), it’s typically not achievement raise. Do they give achievement raise? I know you don’t suppose to know what raises other people get but is it possible everyone just gets 3.5. I’d talk to CEO if they ever give achievements/promotion raises? If they do, then possibly it’s in your bosses interests to downplay your achievements so they don’t have to give any kind of special raise, just one for inflation. Makes one wonder about their agenda Well good evaluations are important regardless if you get paid more or not. Including your accomplishments is important |

Today is my review meeting. I am nervous. I have written out exactly what I will say in response IF he does not include all of my achievements.
This is what I plan to say: Thank you, Keith. I know this review takes a lot of effort and time, which I fully appreciate. However, my achievements from the last year are not fully or accurately portrayed in this review, and they should be. You may have forgotten many of my achievements since you have to review every single one of my reports, so I've pulled together a summary in preparation of this meeting. Can I send my document to you, and are you willing to include the successes I've highlighted? I'd be most grateful and appreciative if you would. IF HE SAYS NO….. Ok, then unfortunately, I will have to bring the issue to HR if you are not willing to include all of my achievements. I found out my co worker got a 4% raise this year; so HR lied about no raises being granted this year. WTF?????

I’d take stuff out about being inaccurately portrayed and him forgetting etc It sounds accusatory.
I’d just say “ I’d like to include additional achievements that aren’t on a review, could I send you a document listing them?” |
