My favorite task that I have to do at work is pay the facilities bills. I know that sounds crazy but let me explain myself, paying the electric bill, the gas bill etc. has a step by step procedure and a definite timetable for completion. When a task is more vague I often don't know what to do and I either plow through like a bull in Chinashop just trying to get it done or I just don't do it. I struggle with task that are vaguely defined.

I also struggle without good organisation, clarity and structure. I have worked various jobs and most have lacked the level of organisation and/or structure that would ease my anxiety, so I just do the best that I can with what I'm given and in the end I think that's all that really matters. I could certainly work on my own communication skills (I have generalised anxiety so will try to avoid bothering the person who gave me the task I'm unsure of until absolutely unavoidable); this would make my life much easier - although at times it may expose a misunderstanding or mistake, it's the best way to learn and most efficient way to work.

I still do panic and need breathing space or go into procrastination mode when a task looks like a tangled ball of yarn that I'll never unravel, but after some breathing space/ procrastination I can calm down and that's when I find I can start to mentally compartmentalise/split the task into doable sections. I find that writing down 'kinks' in the road to my task completion helps immensely, as this allows me to safely temporarily disregard one kink in order to explore the task further and discover another kink. Then I can start to straighten out those kinks on my written list and find satisfaction in the organisation and achievement I create for myself when I get to tick off each kink that I have addressed. Although it creates more work, I believe it's necessary and will ensure far better quality work in the long-run.
